Erosion Control Rock Bags

Fortifier Erosion Control Rock Bags are durable polyester net bags designed to repair, reinforce, and protect areas vulnerable to erosion and scouring. Often fill material from on site may be used, lowering environmental impact and reducing regrowth time. From creek and river banks to wharves and bridge pillars, they are an extremely versatile, simple, and cost-effective solution to flooding issues.

History

Our rock bags aren't just a theory or a new kid on the block, for the last three years they've been deployed by Councils and individuals across the North Island, and they've proved their worth. Originally conceived of in 1969, Rock Bags were used to prevent scouring around the foundations of the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge in Japan, the world's longest suspension bridge. Since then, their use has expanded worldwide, and Rock Bags are now recognised as one of the best techniques available for waterway management and erosion prevention.

Applications

Compared to other solutions, Fortifier Rock Bags are extremely cost-effective and versatile. Placement is highly flexible, and they work well in almost any erosion-control application, be it river, stream or ocean, protecting bridges, ports or roads. Simply fill, and place. No foundations or bed preparation required. They can be filled with graded rock, riprap, or in many cases even river-run from on-site.

Importantly, Fortifier Rock Bags are both environmentally friendly and consentable. Regrowth begins almost immediately, especially if local river run is used. Root systems tie bags together and contribute to bank retention. Eventually, the bags will naturally be covered and integrated into the habitat, assisting stability and promoting rejuvenation of the damaged area.

Our Products

Fortifier Rock Bags come in four standard sizes, with custom sizes available to order. 1t, 2t, 4t, and 8t bags are standard, with 2t and 4t bags stocked locally in NZ. The bags are versatile, robust, and repairable, employing a double-skinned, UV-resistant, polyester raschel net, built to last decades. Expected life is 50 years when buried or submerged, or 20-30 years UV exposure.

Porewa Stream - Cyclone Gabrielle

In December of 2021 the Porewa Stream broke out from its bed and eroded several acres of land. Once the flood waters had receded and the stream returned to its channel, the area was filled, and trees and vegetation were planted to attempt to reinforce the bank. However before any vegetation could begin to take hold, a second flood occurred in May 2022, completely destroying the repairs and vegetation. A truly effective solution was needed...

Rangitikei River Catchment

Parewanui - Rangitikei River, 2023

Just south of the town of Bulls, the Rangitikei River meanders, eroding the west bank. Flooding during Cyclone Gabrielle accelerated the erosion, almost reaching the stop-bank. Horizons Regional Council employed contractors to backfill and repair the 400m long damaged section of riverbank using Fortifier 4-tonne Erosion Control Rock Bags filled with local, ungraded river run.
